We were quite fortunate to receive an invitation to accompany Abe (of Abe's Snorkeling and Bio Bay Tours) on his extended tour of Mosquito Bay (the Bioluminescent Bay) and nearby waters.
Abe guided our small group of kayaks through the mangrove forests, explaining the importance of the mangroves in marine ecology and identifying numerous species of birds, plants and shellfish along the way.
We paddled across the Bay to its narrow mouth, where Abe anchored the kayaks for a snorkeling excursion through the nearby coral reefs. We spotted lobster and thousands of fish, which Abe was ready to identify.
The tour continued onward to a small beach, where we beached the kayaks for a lunch. We waded in the nearby waters, explored the coast and constructed some freestanding rock sculptures.
Our tour concluded with a sunset paddle back into the Bioluminescent Bay. As darkness spread, we could see the water glow with every stroke of the paddle. Vieques settled into night as we once again anchored the kayaks for a swim in enchanted waters.
The swim in the glowing waters underneath a clear and starry sky was memorable and transforming. Abe's perfect explanation of the science and true nature behind this phenomenon only enhanced the experience.
