Guide to Vieques Landmarks

Mosquito Pier

Mosquito Pier is a wide earth pier that extends over 1 mile into Vieques Sound.

Mosquito Pier was constructed during 1941 as part of the US Navy's plan to join Vieques and Puerto Rico with a breakwater to create an enormous naval harbor.

Construction began in early 1941 and proceeded at the rapid pace of several meters a day. The plan was abandoned following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' entrance into World War II.

Today, Mosquito Pier is used as a landing for cargo ferries and for leisure activities. Visitors can travel the length of the pier to enjoy stunning views of Vieques and the Puerto Rico mainland.

Mosquito Pier is a popular fishing ground, and Scuba enthusiasts enjoy diving in the clear, calm waters. Starfish and sea turtles are commonly seen here.

Mosquito Pier is located about one mile west of the Vieques Airport.
