Vieques Community Groups

Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue

The Vieques Humane Society is dedicated to improving the welfare of all animals on the island of Vieques. We strive to bring about a more conscientious community concerning humane issues through aggressive outreach programs.

Vieques, for many years, offered no veterinary or animal rescue services. During the early 1980's, a handful of concerned "immigrants" from the states and a few local residents took a serious interest. They began by feeding the island's strays, then soliciting the help of Puerto Rican veterinarians to sterilize them.

By 1987, the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue, Inc. was officially established as a non-profit organization. Today, we still offer the only veterinary services on the island and have developed many strong community based programs.

Humane Education: "Adopt-A-Classroom" - Classroom visits to our elementary schools every week, providing new material in an effort to educate our children to be better and responsible animal caretakers. If you would like to sponsor a classroom please contact Iris at 787-741-0209.

Scholarship program - Currently in development for post high school training and education in animal welfare programs.

Summer Camps - This past summer we had our first summer camp at VHSAR. Students helped with all aspects of animal care. We plan to make this a yearly event!
