Guide to Vieques Animals

Mongoose
The Mongoose is a small mammal that is similar to a ferret. These animals are very shy and will only be seen darting across the street, or stopping for a bit to eat at a garbage can. The Mongoose feasts on insects, crabs, lizards, rodents and other small animals.
Iguana
These beautifully colored reptiles can grow up to 6ft long and weigh up to 11lbs. Their primary color is a bright green and their underbelly can be orange, yellow or white. Iguanas reside high in the tree canopies, where they sun themselves and eat the vegetation.
Gecko
Geckos are rarely seen as they too are extremely shy and stay to the dark corners. At night, they emerge to eat roaches and pests. You will identify geckos by their large, lidless eyes, their wide, adhesive toes and their almost transparent bodies.
Huntsman spider
These tan and black spiders are usually found lurking in the tight cracks of the walls and door frames. These spiders are very shy and will take off running if you get close enough. The Huntsman spider helps control mosquitos and other small insects.
Tarantula
The Tarantula will be seen amongst brush or under concealing objects. They are not aggressive unless provoked, and they usually stick to themselves. Tarantulas hunt insects and small lizards on the ground. If one is revealed, it remains still or plays dead.
Hermit crabs
The Hermit crab is known for residing in various shells, which it exchanges in order to grow. They are found on dry ground, from the beaches to the mountaintops. If handled, the Hermit crab will retreat into it's shell, but watch out for the powerful purple claw!
