Guide to Vieques Beaches

Playa Grande, Vieques

Playa Grande is a nearly-endless stretch of sand on the south shore of Vieques. An isolated beach, it is not uncommon to have this mile-long beach to yourself.

Playa Grande offers solitude and scenery. A nearby mangrove lagoon attracts shorebirds. Frigates, pelicans and terns soar on the constant sea breezes.

The waters at Playa Grande are not the best for swimming; strong currents and large waves should discourage most swimmers. Playa Grande is excellent for beachcombing, with shells and interesting flotsam.

Those looking for a good two-mile hike can walk to the rocky Punta Vaca area, which has high sea cliffs and excellent views.

Travel to Playa Grande

Playa Grande is about 2 miles west of Esperanza on the south coast of Vieques. Follow Rt. 996 until the road ends at a T-junction near an abandoned guard house. Playa Grande is left.

Follow the road, and you will reach a small parking area and a mangrove lagoon.
