The two small islands outside of Esperanza, Cayo de Tierra and Cayo Afuera, provide two places to appreciate Vieques wildlife.

Cayo Afuera sits several hundred feet offshore. It is accessible by kayak or by strong swimmers.
Cayo Afuera has shallow coral shores on its north (land-facing) side, and wave-pounded sea cliffs on the south. Beautiful snorkeling reefs are west of the cayo, near the large boulders.

Cayo de Tierra can be accessed by foot by walking along the beach from Esperanza to Sun Bay.
The water is too shallow for swimming, though there are numerous small trails leading through the scrub forest. Expect to see pelicans, sea birds and mongoose during a short hike.
